What is a fear of flying?

Fear of flying is a fear of being on an aircraft while in flight, technically known as aviophobia, sometimes also referred to as aerophobia.

You are not alone, around 25% of people have some fear of flying.
1 in 10 people have a serious fear or phobia of flying.

So what causes it?

Research shows the four most common reasons are:

  • A fear of being in the air
  • Being in a closed confined place
  • A fear of heights
  • Loss of control

What's in your list?

Fear of flying may be a distinct phobia in itself or it may be an indirect combination of one or more other disorders, such as claustrophobia (a phobia of being restricted, confined, or unable to escape) or acrophobia (anxiety or dread of being at a great height). It may have other causes as well, such as agoraphobia (especially the type associated with having a panic attack in a place they can't escape from).

Aviophobia recieves alot of attention because air travel is common and may be difficult to avoid.

It is common and affects a significant number of people. Inability to maintain emotional control when aloft may prevent you from going on holidays or visiting your family and friends, and if you're a business person it may also be crippling your career by preventing you from traveling on work-related business.

But you can change it by following simple steps.
